Hair transplant is undoubtedly one of the most sought after procedures. Loss of hair can negatively impact the way a person perceives themselves in many ways. The toll on mental health can even affect physical health as a result of the anxiety and stress caused by continuous hair fall. Seeking the treatment, therefore, can make dreams of a luscious mane come true for many people.

If you keep your focus on the end result, you might not even feel tired. However, many people get fatigued because of the large magnitude of details that go into the process. Among one of the important steps that you need to be careful about is aftercare and following the provided post-operative instructions. It would be wrong to underestimate the procedure’s post-op care.

Although hair transplantation is an easy surgery that requires no stay at the hospital and allows people to get back to work within two days, it still requires considerable looking after. So, you can maximize the result of your surgery by doing a good research on the specific details involved in the procedure and following the provided instructions.

What are the Complications Associated with a Hair Transplant?

You don’t need to worry about developing long-term side effects as a result of hair transplant surgery. It is possible to develop minor complications though, but there’s no need for concern as they’ll clear up in a short period.

Most commonly you might experience swelling of the scalp, bleeding, itching, the formation of crust on the areas of the scalp where hair was removed or implanted. You might also experience a lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp or unnatural-looking tufts of hair. Shock loss can also occur, which is nothing but a temporary condition that occurs right after the surgery resulting in loss of hair. More rarely an infection can develop, or the hair follicles can get inflamed, also known as folliculitis.

For preventive measure or to minimize the side effects, in case you have developed them, your surgeon will prescribe some medications to you and even make recommendations. It is important that you do as is instructed by the doctor to heal properly.

Types of Medications

Following are the few types of medicines that your doctor may prescribe to you.

Anti-Swelling Tablets

As stated before, it is quite common to develop swelling of the scalp. The good news is that there’s nothing to worry about as it’s completely normal. Inflammation or fluid retention by the body can cause it, and if you have started to swell, it just means that your body is in the recovery process.

In hair transplant surgery, the body is injected with many medicines and incisions are also made, all of which can contribute to swelling. So, you can probably expect it to happen. While there are some tips that you may follow in order to avoid or take care of it, our surgeons do give some of the patients some tablets to minimize the swelling.

These are the medicines that are used to fight off harmful bacteria. Although it is quite rare to develop an infection as a result of hair transplant surgeries, it is still a risk that is possible in every other surgery.

It is not necessarily prescribed, but for some cases, surgeons may give antibiotics to ensure that the patient does not suffer from any infection. Antibiotics will make sure to take care of it. Though it is not taken by every person, because we provide customized treatments. It’s the surgeon’s decision to prescribe medicines or not according to the patient’s case.

Anti-Inflammatory Medicines

Another common occurrence in post-op hair transplantation is inflammation. It develops as a result of the immune system’s response in its fight against foreign invaders in the form of bacteria or viruses. The most common reasons for their development is an infection or physical injury. As in the case of hair transplant, the body can perceive the incisions as injury and infection can, although rarely, develop, inflammation can, quite commonly, occur.

You’ll usually experience pain, swelling, heat and redness as a result and so anti-inflammatories. They help deal with the unpleasant symptoms of the body’s defence system.

Hair transplant surgery is performed under local anaesthesia so the patient does not feel any pain during the operation. But once the surgery is over and the effects of anaesthesia wear off, the patient can experience pain.

To deal with this, the surgeon provides the patient with painkiller tablets.

Vitamins and Supplements

Vitamins and supplements have been known to help in the healing of wounds, boosting of the immune system and repairing damaged cells along with performing other beneficial bodily functions. However, they aren’t necessarily taken before and after hair transplant. Not that they’re harmful in any way.

Some patients believe that taking vitamins will improve the results of the surgery. The doctors, on the other hand, don’t think that it is compulsory to consume vitamins or supplements during the post-op process. However, if a person is suffering from any dietary or mineral deficiency in the body, they can consult our surgeon about the vitamin and supplements option.

Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)

The yellowish liquid medium that holds the cells of the blood is known as plasma. Platelets, on the other hand, are blood cells that help in the formation of blood clots and cellular growth. PRP is not a drug but in fact your own blood cells.

Their injections are prepared through the extraction of blood from your own body, which is then passed through a centrifuge for platelet concentration. These are then injected into the body and can play a role in the healing process after hair transplant surgery. It can be beneficial in supporting the treatment. Although it is not prescribed, our surgeons strongly recommend using PRP to improve the results of the surgery.

Anxiolytic Medicine

Anxiolytics are also known as anti-anxiety drugs and are used by patients to treat anxiety disorders or prevent anxiety. It is understandable that for many patients, surgery can be very stressful and anxiety-inducing.

Therefore, if the patient is too anxious, we use them before the surgery. It helps them to relax.

Other Medications

If a patient has high blood pressure or diabetes, then they should keep taking the medications for them. However, they should definitely inform the surgeon about it.

Another medication to be careful about is sleeping pills. You should not take them before and after hair transplant.

Lotion and Shampoo

Other than the medicines, a temporary routine change that you may experience after surgery is the use of a special lotion and shampoo. You should use the lotion for 14 days,  and the shampoo until the bottle finishes. They will help moisturize the skin, soften the scabs for easy removal and even help in healing.

You should remain careful about not harshly rubbing your grafts. In fact, only touch them using your fingertips and remember not to take pressurized showers with hot or cold water.

Concluding Remarks

Hair transplant surgery can help many people looking for a permanent solution to their hair loss problem. Although in some cases we may recommend other treatments that can work better for your condition. In any case, it’s important that you follow all the instructions given by the surgeon and take the prescribed medicines. Most of them aim to speed up the recovery process and get desirable results.
