Over 50% Would Pull A Will Smith For Their Loved One

Oscars 2022 will be remembered for Will Smith slapping Chris Rock across the face for making fun of his wife’s alopecia. The joke was a reference to Demi Moore’s shaved head in the movie G.I. Jane. The slap was also followed by the star swearing at the comedian as he headed back to his seat.

It has led to a heated debate over the “rightness or wrongness” of the situation. In a public apology on Instagram, Smith admitted that his actions were wrong, with his behaviour being “unacceptable and inexcusable”, but many are still questioning whether he was really in the wrong.

A survey conducted by Longevita Hair Transplant asked the question, “Would you ever physically assault someone if they joke about your loved ones’ hair loss?” To this, 50.9% of the audience responded positively. Of the 626 votes cast, 319 were in favour, while 307 were against the idea.

Additionally, on being asked, “Would you ever swear at someone if they joke about your loved one’s hair loss?” 80% said that they would swear. With 588 votes in, 469 said “yes” to cursing while 119 said “no.” There are many who believe that Chris’ remarks were “crass,” “cruel”, and as “violent” as Smith’s response.

In light of this, although some have deemed the Oscar winner justified in hitting him, others believe he should’ve responded differently. However, it should be noted that reportedly Chris Rock wasn’t aware of Jada’s condition before the Oscars, even though Jada publicly shared her struggle with it back in 2018 in her Facebook series Red Table Talk.

Alopecia is a medical term for excessive hair loss. It can occur due to different reasons. Back in December, Jada did post a video of her shaved head on Instagram because of her struggle with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that affects more African Americans than whites or Asians.

It has a genetic component to it and can affect a person since their childhood. The condition does not result in permanent hair loss. Usually, it results in the formation of small, smooth patches on the scalp. It can also affect other parts of the body. The experience can be psychologically distressing for its sufferers.

Methodology

On their official Instagram pages, Longevita Hair Transplant conducted a survey asking two questions, both of which had “yes” and “no” answers:

  1. Would you ever physically assault someone if they joke about your loved ones’ hair loss?
  2. Would you ever swear at someone if they joke about your loved one’s hair loss?

For each question, the total number of votes cast was added separately, and the percentages calculated.
