While Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) has taken over from Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) as the method of choice for transplant procedures, the FUT hair transplant in Turkey is still commonly in use today. Hair loss affects a huge number of men and women in the UK and not every patient will benefit in the same way from FUE procedures. As a result, FUT hair transplant methods are still in use and can provide lasting results in these patients.
FUT hair transplants often referred to as the ‘strip method’, features the extraction of a strip of skin from the scalp. This is typically taken from the healthiest area of growth, which is often the back or sides of the scalp. This strip is then separated into groups of around 1-3 hair follicles. A small incision will be made into the area of thinning or hair loss on the patient’s scalp and the follicles will be implanted into these areas.
FUT was the dominant form of hair transplant for many years and while FUE has taken this practice and offered a more modern alternative, the benefits of FUT are often something to consider. FUT hair transplants often see higher volumes of follicles transplanted in every session undertaken, and are therefore the better option for those who may not be able to dedicate time to multiple transplant dates.
Patients with weaker follicles or with limited donor availability may also be suggested FUT transplants, as FUT often sees a higher rate of survival for the hair follicles both during, and after transplantation. FUT procedures are also recommended for those requiring larger hair transplants. This is due to the higher yield of follicles needed and the superior results often gained as a result.
There are very few guidelines for determining whether a patient is a good candidate for an FUT transplant, however, a consultant will often take into account the following to determine whether or not you will be eligible for the procedure:
Your FUT hair transplant in Turkey will take anything between 6-8 hours depending on the nature of your hair loss and how many grafts you will require. You will be put under local anaesthetic to relieve any discomfort throughout the procedure and in most cases, will be able to leave the clinic the same day as your surgery.
You will return to your hotel after the procedure to rest, however, we do suggest that you stay in either Istanbul or Izmir, dependant on your location of choice for your FUT hair transplant in Turkey, for up to a week. On the second day, you will have a follow-up appointment. Your surgeon will check your transplant and how it has settled overnight, as well as provide you with full aftercare instruction on how to wash and care for your transplanted hair.
During the week spent in Turkey post-procedure, you will be able to explore the cities and the surrounding area whilst remaining close by to ensure that any potential effects or concerns are solved prior to your return to the UK. Once you do fly home, however, you will be able to remain in contact with the same host you’ll have been dedicated throughout your stay. They will be able to provide advice and will check in with you regularly to see how your scalp is healing.
