What is a personalized assessment?

A hair transplant procedure requires a good plan and a thorough study of a patient’s case. Regardless of what technique a patient wishes to go for, every patient is unique and so is their treatment. A good medical institution or surgeon will examine and study a patient’s case and then decide how the procedure should be carried out. Things like, what technique is to be used, is the donor area capable for extraction, does the patient have any medical disease such as, diabetes or blood pressure, etc. are assessed and treatment is planned out accordingly.

All of these elements are to be brought to light while planning out a hair transplant procedure. This is done by designing a customized assessment plan. The patient is then sure that each and every step of the treatment is unique as per his case and he or she is at the right place and in capable hands. Some clinics see their patients as “customers” and tailor a general assessment plan without examining them. This assessment plan might only roughly cover their needs and requirement. Chances are that the transplant procedure will not be as effective as it could be. These clinics try to sell a standard package to everyone without putting in special efforts for individual patients.

At Longevita, we provide our patients with a specially designed personal treatment plan. We also assess and examine each patient’s case, so that we can plan and execute an efficient procedure. For a personalized assessment plan, a patient only has to send clear photos of the area where they want to get their hair transplant. Therefore, we can make an assessment of the patient’s case and inform the patients about the approximate graft number and suitable hair transplant technique from the two techniques that are the DHI and the FUE.

What information should be given for an assessment?

Ideally, we ask the patients to send six photos in total. The number might vary depending on the case. They need to send photos of the area they wish to get their hair transplanted, i.e. the recipient area and of the donor area, which is the area at the back of the head, above the neck and between the ears. Many patients fail to send a clear photo of the donor area. The best way to get a really good photo is to take photos in natural light and to get somebody to take a photo from the back as the patient cannot get a good photo all by himself. The infographic above is a clear example of how to take photos of your hair properly.

Another mistake patients generally do is that they record and send videos. Videos are not a good option because they are not clear and they are not still. The patient consultant and the surgeon will not be able to examine the donor and recipient areas and will not be able to determine and provide a proper assessment.

As Instagram is a trending social media platform that also allows us to share visual media, many patients also use this facility to send a video for assessment. A video sent via Instagram direct message cannot be used to make a proper assessment. Because again it will not be clear and a video sent via direct message service cannot be viewed multiple times. It is obvious that the patient will be sending the video to the appointment coordinator and not the surgeon, and the appointment coordinator will not be able to forward that video to the surgeon. So the video sent via Instagram would be inadmissible. Another drawback of a video is that it cannot be zoomed in on all areas to conduct a thorough examination and design an assessment. This is the reason we ask our patients to send photos. The coordinator can then forward the photos to the surgeon so that he or she can study the patient’s areas of treatment and examine them thoroughly to provide the best assessment.

Another important thing a patient must do to get a proper assessment is to inform the performing surgeon know about his or her medical history if any. If the patient happens to have any kind of allergies, diseases or had any kind of surgery before, it is the best practice to let your surgeon know, so that he could set precautions for a smooth and successful treatment. It is recommended that a patient shares his or her concerns and expectations to get reasonable and realistic answers.
