What is the most common reason for hair loss?

The most common reason is genetics. In addition to this, stress, hormonal imbalances,  thyroid gland diseases, vitamin & iron deficiency may cause hair loss. Also, injuries and burnt can be the causes as well.

What is the difference between man hair loss and woman hair loss in terms of reasons?

Both men and women can experience hair loss due to genetic reasons. Women also may experience hair loss due to pregnancy, post-natal period, menopause. We see genetics-caused hair loss almost 50% of the men, while this percentage is less for women.

How a person decides to have hair transplant surgery?

People start searching for a hair transplant as a permanent solution when their hair loss affects their daily life in a physiological and social way.

Generally, successfully treated people may inspire potential hair transplant patients on their decision-making process.

How a patient should get ready for the surgery?

The patients should collect information from reliable resources.

What is the most common question you get from patients?

How long does it take? Is general anaesthesia applicable? How long does it take to recover from the redness and scars? Can we do unshaven? When can I go back to work? Will the transplanted hair fall of? Is it painful afterwards the surgery?

Is the Hair Transplant Procedure Painful?

Traditional local anaesthesia involves needles so the patient may feel pain for 2-3 minutes.

Can you provide a little more information about needle-free anaesthesia?

Needle-free anaesthesia injects it by pumping a high-pressure stream of fluid, which penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream. This way, the patient does not feel the touch of a needle.

Needle-free anaesthesia is a great solution for those who have a needle phobia and low pain tolerance.

How to decide the design of the new hairline? Is there any cases in which the hairline patient wished is refused by the surgeon?

The hairline is different for everybody. Therefore the redesigned hairline should be customized to the patient. The forehead and face structure is deterministic while designing the hairline.  The new hairline shouldn’t be lower than the muscles, and the golden ratio should be taken into consideration.

There are many techniques for hair transplant. Can you explain how to choose the most suitable one?

It depends on the patients’ needs. If the procedure limited to lowering the hairline and does not require many grafts, unshaven can be preferable. If the baldness is large and many grafts are needed, FUE should be preferable. In FUE, a lot of grafts can be extracted and higher density can be achieved. In other cases, other techniques can be used.

What is the procedure after your first meeting with the patient?

Follows as these; registration, blood test, consultation with surgeon( the patient will decide about his/her treatment plan and hairline), after that, patient’s hair is shaved and the procedure starts.

Firstly, the procedure starts with numbing the donor area once the area is numbed, the patient will be ready for the extraction part. We put the collected grafts in a special glass holder with optimum temperature.

When all extraction process is done, we may revise our patient’s hairline according to the collected number of grafts and once he/she confirms it we start to apply anaesthesia to balding area to open the channels.

The final part is implanting where we put the grafts to opened channels very carefully.

The whole process takes 6 to 8 hours and the patients may have some breaks and also their lunches.

How many people are in your team?

3 or 4, depending on the graft number.

Is the procedure the same for both men and women?

It usually is. For female patients, if they have long hair and need hair transplant only on the frontal area; the procedure can be done without shaving all head but only shortening the hair in a way that it masks the donor area as well.

What are the risks of hair transplantation? What is the complication rate?

If the surgery is done under necessary conditions and the team is expert, the complication rate is almost zero. To reduce the risk of complication, a piece of detailed information about the health & habits of the patient should be taken before the surgery. Although it is seldom if the patient smokes and has diabetes, the transplanted hair can’t be nourished and the risk of failure occurs.

How long does it take to recover? What are the main post-operative instructions?

Recovery process depending on the person’s skin type and also metabolism.

Averagely it takes 1-2 weeks to feel totally normal.

In the first three days, it is very important to protect to head against any damage as the grafts are fresh they may move.

The patients should lay on their back and avoid leaning forward to minimize swelling on the head. Mostly, drinking a lot of water advised and also they should not eat too much salty/ spicy things.

We do provide all post-op instructions as written and the patient have to follow all steps to have a great final result. The recovery process will be following during one year by us so our patients may consult us whenever they need.

Antibiotics, anti-swelling tablets and also painkillers are provided to the patient.

When will the new hair come out?

After three months, the new hair starts to come out. It continues to start out faster in the following months. At the 8th month, 70% of the result can be seen. The final result can be seen after the first year.

What are the false facts about hair transplantation?

“Hair transplantation cant be done during summer” No, it can be done in every season. However, the head should be protected from the direct sunlight.

“To have a strong hair, you need to shave it” Shaving has no positive or negative effect on the strength of the hair.

“Transplanted hair cant be remained short” It can be. However, it is better to keep it a little longer during the first year.

“You have to wait until you’re completely bald before having surgery” You don’t have to wait.

“The transplanted hair doesn’t come out in the crown area.” No, it does.

Is it possible to stop hair loss in nonsurgical methods?

For seasonal hair loss, PRP and mesotherapy can be used. Similarly, if the hair loss is due to lack of iron&vitamin deficiency, supplements can be used. If the hair loss is caused by genetics, there is no solution apart from hair transplantation surgery. The same methods can be used to slow down the process.

What are the features of a suitable candidate for hair transplant?

The donor area must be strong enough to have a hair transplant.

We are unable to perform the procedure if the donor area is thin, small or medically unsuitable.

Also, the patient has to wait for 2 years before deciding to the procedure if he/she has had chemotherapy treatment, experienced hair loss due to lack of vitamins and iron.

Besides these, everybody may be a candidate for hair transplant even they have a scar on their head.

What are the features of a good hair transplant surgeon?

I think a surgeon who follows the new trends and makes researches to develop himself/herself, who understands the expectation of his/her patient and does not provide unrealistic promises, who takes his/her job seriously and works with the same team, who cares about the patient’s health instead of economic gain and who stands for the job he/she has done is always successful.
