Meanwhile, we’ll make sure to inform you about anything that may concern you during the period, such as swelling so that you can be stress-free.

What is Swelling?

Swelling refers to the abnormal enlargement of any part of the body, whether it is internal or external. It can develop either as a result of inflammation or due to fluids that are retained within the body. Completely normal in its occurrence, it’s the body’s way of reacting to any sort of injury sustained. Incisions made during the surgery are also a form of injury which can get inflamed and swollen. Another reason can be anaesthesia, as many liquids are injected to the head before the surgery. Medicines are injected even during the surgery, which can all cause swelling to occur.

Is the Post-Op Swelling a Cause for Concern?

Swelling is the body’s natural reaction to many things, and it’s totally normal in case it occurs. As a matter of fact, you should expect it to occur because it’s quite common. There’s no need for alarm, however, because when the body gets swollen as a result of inflammation, it means that it has already entered the first stage of healing of which swelling is a part along with redness, pain, and heat.

It is a common occurrence for a patient to get anxious about the amount or duration of the swelling, but there is no need to worry. After the surgery and during hair transplant post-op period, the swelling will eventually go away. So, you don’t need to get stressed about it and be as relaxed as possible so that your body can fasten the healing and hair transplant aftercare.

Tips to Prevent or Minimize Swelling

There are ways to minimize a swelling too once it has developed. Both prevention and minimization techniques will be discussed here:

Avoid Exercise

It is understandable that for some exercise is a regular and important part of their routines, but it is also one of the things to be avoided immediately during hair transplant aftercare. It may cause you to sweat, which should be avoided at all costs. You can read more about the importance of avoiding exercise after hair transplants on our site.

Keep the Head Elevated

Elevating the surgical areas is generally recommended for any type of surgery and not just hair transplant. Here though, the head should be kept elevated even when sleeping, and you should not try to bend down and look below instead keep it up.

Sleep on Your Back

It is important that in the immediate stages of hair transplant aftercare, you do not sleep on your forehead. Make sure that it is your back that supports the weight while sleeping. Another thing that should be taken care of is the angle of the head. Put several pillows under the neck to reduce swelling.

Drink Lots of Water

During hair transplant aftercare try to stay hydrated as much as you can. It’s because the water helps flush out the liquids that are injected into the head during the surgery. This will help reduce the swelling so drinking a lot of water is advised.

Make Compressions

Compressions can help with reducing the swelling by decreasing blood flow. It is advised to make compressions above the cheeks though and not on the head. As the grafts are still delicate, any undue pressure or movement might harm them so it should be avoided.
