Once you’ve travelled to our hospital to receive your hair transplant procedure and achieved a successful transplant, it might feel like everything is finished. It may be tempting to feel like you no longer need to think or worry about your hair. But for patients who want their procedure to last and have excellent results long-term, the early effort you put into maintaining and providing aftercare to your scalp can make all the difference.

On the completion of your procedure, your hair transplant surgery team will offer you information on the proper care and management of your new hairline following your procedure. For those looking to prepare ahead of time or who are looking for added insight and depth into what is required for after hair transplant care, read on to find out more.

What You Need To Know

There is a range of different hair transplant procedures available on the market, and in the majority of cases, these will be non-invasive procedures. As such, these will follow similar aftercare routines. For more invasive procedures, it’s essential to follow the exact advice given by your surgeon following implantation.

With non-invasive procedures, you will be able to leave the clinic the same day in the majority of cases, and you can travel and work as usual during this time, as long as your aftercare plan is followed. Many clinics will advise you to take 1-2 weeks off following your surgery to ensure proper healing and allow you to rest.

Medications And Treatments

Following your surgical procedure, your after hair transplant care will likely involve several medications, all of which aid in the healing and management of your new hair. This may include antibiotics for at least four days following your transplant procedure, to protect you against infection and allow your hair to become further integrated with your scalp.

Other medical options will include medication or cream to reduce swelling, as well as painkillers for the first few days following your procedure. Medicated shampoo or wash will also be included as part of your after hair transplant care pack, to be used as instructed on its packaging. Often, this shampoo only needs to be used for the first few hair washes following your treatment.

Hair Care

You’ll likely be keen to enjoy and style your hair, but it’s important to follow the instructions from your surgeon when it comes to anything from touching your freshly implanted hair follicles to the type of hair care routine you follow. One example of this is with the shampoo you will be provided.

You will likely be able to wash your hair the day following your procedure, using the provided shampoo or wash for at least the first two weeks. Over washing is not recommended as it can irritate the scalp. Conditioner should also not be used during this period, or any other hair products such as mousse, hairspray or gels as this can cause irritation.

Your new hair will start to become more noticeable in the months following the procedure, and final results can take up to one year to become fully apparent, offering a greater body to the hair. For those who have a shaven head for the procedure, it’s not advisable to visit a barber until at least three months following implantation to create a uniform look.

What Not To Do During Your Aftercare Period

While your scalp is still healing and your implants are still fresh, it’s important to follow the advice of your aftercare team in regards to things you can and cannot do. Swimming, for example, is not recommended within two weeks of your surgery, especially where chlorine is present in the water, as this may cause issues with your transplanted follicles.

In addition, it’s not advised to have your head in direct sunlight for the weeks following your procedure, as this may also cause harm or damage, resulting in rejection of the hair follicles. Depending on your exact process, your surgery team may have other aftercare advice, and it’s important to conform to these requirements to ensure your hairline heals appropriately and effectively.

As with any treatment or procedure, invasive or otherwise, it’s important to take any medications and manage your aftercare as required by the surgical team you work with. If you have any questions at the time, it’s important to talk to your surgeon before returning home, to ensure the best possible results every time.
