Finally, a long wait will soon be over. It is the day when your patience will pay off, and it is going to be worth it. Deciding to get a hair transplant surgery can be exhilarating. Days and days of excessive hair loss can cause a vicious cycle of anxiety. You may get anxious about having hair fall and then get even anxious when that stress causes further hair fall.
When the operation day of the hair transplant surgery draws near, a mix of fear and excitement may envelop you. A hair transplant surgery will restore your confidence and self-esteem, but, quite naturally, many feel afraid that the results might not be as they desire or imagine. It’s a common experience, which is why in our initial consultation with the patient, we try to inform them of what’s actually achievable according to their donor area. But once the treatment plan has been chalked out and the operation day has arrived, you can say your goodbyes to the problem of baldness.
It’s good if you have a clear schedule in mind of what’s going to happen on that day. It will, of course, be primarily about the surgery, but that won’t be it. The better prepared you’ll be, the smoother your day will go. In this guide, you will be provided with all the details and information about what to expect during the surgery day. There’s a lot to go through so, let’s dive into it.
Start of the Day
With Longevita, you’ll travel to Turkey for your hair transplant surgery with the cost of accommodation, airport transfer services, and the treatment all included in the package. The hotels where you’ll be staying offer utter luxury and comfort. You’ll have the choice of accommodation between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul.
Therefore, in the morning, our patients wake up well-rested and fresh in their rooms. You too can expect that. They can have a delicious Turkish breakfast to their heart’s content. The breakfast is included in the package so you won’t be making any extra payments. Minibars, TVs, free Wi-Fi, swimming pools, spas, facial treatments, massages, and fitness centre, among many other facilities, will help you unwind and keep the surgery stress at bay.
People around the globe desire to see the country that is laden with a rich history and has been the junction of Roman, Greek, Christian, and Muslim influences. This trait makes Turkey attractive to most as, in some way, everyone finds themselves connected to the land.
If your hair transplant surgery is going to take place in the afternoon, then you should make use of the time to discover the tourist attractions around the city. Istanbul’s Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia Museum, Bosphorus Strait, and so many other places always take the breath away of people who visit them.
Time to Go to the Clinic
The hotels that we choose for our patients are in specific locations. What determines where you’ll be staying, is the clinic you’ll be visiting and initial agreement of your itinerary. Their main purpose is to provide proximity to the site of treatment other than offering a comfortable stay. They are mostly at walking distance, so there’s no risk of getting late or lost.
Although the hotels are close to the clinic, you still have to be ready at the clinic 30 minutes before the surgery.
What’ll Happen in the Clinic?
Once you’ve arrived at the clinic for your hair transplant surgery, you will first meet your patient relations specialist. It is the same person who previously called you to introduce herself/himself. After you’ve been greeted by them, then comes the registration part. This will simply involve filling some forms by you, and once the paperwork has been done, then comes the blood testing stage.
Blood Testing Stage
The blood test is compulsory, no matter which surgery you’re undergoing. It will determine whether or not you are suitable for being operated upon. In some cases, the test results may show that a patient has a particular ailment that makes them vulnerable to the surgeries. Here, we can’t risk them by proceeding to the operation. It further checks if there are any blood or clotting issues.
The reason why the consumption of aspirin among other medicines is stopped 10 days before the surgery is that it can cause excessive bleeding, which negatively impacts the procedure, healing process, and the result. So, you have to be careful about what you’re putting in your body before hair transplant surgery. Only once the blood test results come clear will the consultation part begin.
The Consultation on Operation Day
This is the part where the patient will meet with the surgeon face to face. Many people get confused about the consultation itself and have many questions about it. You should not hesitate at all to find out what you need to know. Getting hair transplant surgery is a big decision, so nothing should be considered trivial.
You will have noticed that before the package is bought, your consultation was not conducted with an operating doctor. It does not imply that the relevant staff will not be able to answer your queries. The patient consultants get patients photos and transfer them to the surgeon, then inform the patients according to the surgeon’s assessment. The surgeon, however, will be available for consultation after you’ve arrived in Turkey for the procedure.
He/she will examine the hair, the balding areas, and the quality of the donor area. After that, all your wishes and concerns will be addressed in utmost detail so that you are at ease. This will be followed by drawing of the new hairline to the head and showing to you, the patient. The surgeon will inform you about the number of grafts that will be taken and how they will be distributed to the different parts of the scalp.
This won’t be any new information because patients get a treatment plan before coming to Turkey based on the photos they’ve sent of their hair. So, there is no need to get worried about any drastic changes happening on the day of the surgery unless your pictures assessed prior to arrival are very different from your actual physical appearance.
Will Anything Change on Operation Day of Hair Transplant?
It is quite common that on the operation day, there might be minor changes during the face to face consultation. The treatment plan, however, will more or less remain the same. Therefore, there is no reason at all to be alarmed if this happens.
There are many factors that can contribute to the changes. As mentioned above, patients are asked to send photos of their hair during the initial stages. These can sometimes be misleading. This can cause a slight deviation from the original plan. Other than that, delay in surgery, hormonal and medical changes can also be cited as reasons.
In any case, your approval is the most important. Only after the patient agrees on the treatment plan and has signed the consent form we will proceed to the shaving part.
Shaving Requirements According to the Procedure
Different transplantation procedures are unique and so are their demands, such as shaving. It is through this that we’ll be able to collect the grafts.
Direct Hair Implantation or DHI, is a procedure in which a Choi Implanter Pen is used for accurate transplants. It has a slightly faster healing time than FUE hair transplant. For getting this done, only the donor area of the patient is shaved. The rest of the hair can remain unshaven.
In Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant surgery, single follicles are first extracted, then harvested and transplanted into the scalp through small incisions. Here, shaving of the full head is required. After this part has been done, we proceed to the surgery.
Finally the Surgery Time
Hair transplant surgery begins with anaesthesia. It is given to numb the surgical areas. Although it is usually administered through the use of a needle, there are other ways if you’re afraid of them.
At Longevita, we also offer needle-free anaesthesia. In this option, we use a jet injector to fire anaesthetics under extremely high pressure into the bloodstream that penetrates the skin in much the same way as a needle does. This has an added advantage of removing any pain or soreness during or after the procedure.
After that, the medical staff collects the grafts and the surgeon opens the canals. The collected grafts are then transplanted to the recipient areas by the expert medical team. The total time taken by the surgery is more or less 8 hours, and there is a lunch break in the middle.
Done and Ready to Return
After the hair transplant surgery, the patient is free to go back to his/her hotel to rest. If they feel like exploring the city a little, they can go outside to enjoy. But be careful; you must not drink any alcoholic beverages after the hair transplant surgery.
