Designing A Hairline: How Will Your Surgeon Produce The Best Look?

Suffering from hair loss can be very frustrating and finding a solution to the problem can be tough – there are so many different natural remedies available to try out and, unfortunately, a lot of them don’t bring about the results that you dream of when you envision your new look. Whilst hair loss can be difficult to come to terms with, having a moving or receding hairline can be equally as difficult and can leave you feeling incredibly self-conscious. If you feel as though you have tried every other remedy out there, then it may well be worth considering surgery to both give you back your confidence and improve your hairline for the future.

What is a receding hairline?

A receding hairline is where the hair starts to move backwards across the top of the head. It is much more common in men than it is women, with women much more prone to thinning hair rather than a receding hairline. When the hair moves backwards across the top of the head, a ring of hair around the top of the scalp is often left behind and thinning hair may continue to grow on the top of the head. Causes of receding hairlines can vary – they can be hereditary or else caused by natural loss of hair as you get older. If you’re a woman, a shift in your hormones during the menopause can also lead to hair loss.

How can my surgeon ensure that I get the best, most natural look?

Often when having consultations for hairline constructions, patients express their desire for thick and voluptuous hair, but such a change can often end in results that don’t look anywhere near as natural as you were hoping for. Surgeons are very insightful and have spent a long time studying techniques that help them to understand their clients and the types of procedures that work well depending on a number of factors. For hair transplants to be successful in the long term, the amount of genetic hair that you currently have is key – this hair is transferred to balding areas, so the new hairline is established depending on how much genetic hair is viable.

How does the surgeon decide where my hairline should be?

There are four key points to consider when realigning a hairline – the anterior, which is the starting point of the frontal hairline; the lateral portion, which is the width of the hairline across your head; the direction in which the hair grows and how irregular the hairline currently is. With these things considered, the surgeon is able to correctly predict where on your head the hairline should be placed to ensure that it looks as natural as possible.

This framing of the hairline is incredibly important – if the hairline is misaligned, it will be blatantly apparent, and the hair will look strange on your head. Hair is normally transplanted onto the scalp at an angle, making it appear all the more natural and giving the hair a layered, full look when it is combed backwards away from the forehead – hair that comes straight out at the scalp will appear less natural and could even look as though a hairpiece has been fitted to the head.
